Dodge made a big announcement during their press conference at the 2015 SEMA Show in Las Vegas last night: the 2016 Viper ACR had broken 13 lap production car lap records at 13 different racetracks across the United States. These tracks included famous courses such as Virginia International Race and Mazda Racewway Laguna Seca, where the Viper ACR was able to run faster laps than seven-figure hybrid hypercars like the Porsche 918.
Of particular note is the 2016 Viper ACR’s Laguna Seca lap time of 1:28.65. Once upon a time, the Viper guys went head-to-head with the Corvette ZR1 for production car supremacy at Laguna Seca, with their Viper TA narrowly lapping the track faster than the ‘Vette. The Viper recently lost that production car record to the $847,000 Porsche 918, but the ACR was able to reclaim it with a jaw-dropping lap time that was almost a full second faster than the 887 horsepower Porsche.
If you don’t believe the comparably archaic Viper ACR can pound a Porsche 918 into the pavement, watch Randy Pobst’s lap of Laguna Seca above.
