Despite the fact he races for rival Mercedes-Benz AMG Petronas, Lewis Hamilton says a surge in performance from Scuderia Ferrari in 2016 would be “good for the sport.”
Hamilton, who won the World Championship last year after a dominating performance that saw him and Mercedes 16 of the season’s 19 races, recognized that teammate Nico Rosberg and Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel will both be a major threat in 2016, but added that a closer competition among the top three drivers would be good.
“Sebastian is always going to be one of the strongest opponents, but it depends how you look at it,” Hamilton told RACER.
“As a driver from another team he’s definitely going to be the strongest opponent, but Nico will come strong next year. But of course I hope we do have a race with the Ferraris – I think it would be good for the sport.
“Hopefully it will be with us being in front, but still a good race,” he added.
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff also said seeing Ferrari catch up to them next year would be good for fans and for F1.
“They (Vettel and Hamilton) are both in cars that are performing very well,” said Wolff. “It could be one of the great rivalries in the sport – in different teams obviously, but Lewis has his own rivalry within the team, so that is good.”
