Fiat Chrysler is voluntarily recalling Ram 1500 pickup trucks over an issue with the rear axle that could lead to wheel separation.
The defect: the affected vehicles may have been built with supplier-provided rear axles that were incorrectly heat treated. This may contribute to increased wear and overheating that is sufficient to illuminate a vehicle’s Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) warning light.
The hazards: if the rear axle shaft was not properly heated treated, it may fracture, resulting in wheel separation and increasing the risk of a crash.
The automaker is aware of one potentially-related accident but no injuries.
Affected vehicles: 2015-2016 Ram 1500 pickups produced between between June 17, 2015, to September 28, 2015. Most of the affected vehicles are in dealer hands.
Number of vehicles affected: 86,046 total vehicles across the following markets:
- 65,760 in the United States
- 16,647 in Canada
- 1,924 in Mexico
- 1,715 outside the NAFTA region
The fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles and replace the axle assemblies, as necessary, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule.
Owners should: customers looking to find out if their vehicle is included in this Fiat-Chrysler recall should visit recalls.mopar.com. There, owners will be able to enter their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to see any open recalls as well as customer satisfaction programs.
If the vehicle is part of the recall or if customers observe an ABS warning light, or any other item of concern on their vehicles, they should contact their Chrysler dealer.
